Week In Review

I’ve been post-less here on benkuhns dot com for nearly a week now. Where are the NYC photos you ask? Well right here of course, every last one of them (plus an extra one actually). I decided to see if the format worked better to post a larger batch of photographs at once, but less frequently. In hindsight I’m not so hot on the idea so we will return to the regularly scheduled programming.

On Fire.

FDNY puts out a fire in Times Square.

How fantastic that as I’m standing in Times Square, losing interest in the mass of tourists around me something exciting should happen. Out of nowhere came sirens and shouts as an engine of the FDNY pulls up beside me and firefights started piling out. I circled around the truck to find the men dragging a burning trash can out into the street in preparation to pour water on it.

What surprised me was how nonchalant the whole thing was. People stopped to get their pictures taken next to the scene and general air was very casual.

On second thought, not so exciting.

Mexico 2010

Early this month Sam (she just tore her MCL, so go give her some love) and I headed to Cancun for a week to celebrate her graduation. Planes, layovers in Mexico City, subways, street food, street photography, and gaping mouths at my red hair were definite themes of the journey. Cancun itself was one of the least inspiring places I’ve ever been for photography. Watching overweight white people enjoy their all-inclusive resort getaways while fighting for control of the poolside seating doesn’t really compel one to pick up the camera.

What you see below are photos from the attempts Sam and I made to get some of the real Mexico. I’m pleased to say that if you’re willing to ignore what the tourist sites say and have a little balls, the real Mexico is marvelous. Photographs begin in Mexico City before moving to local heavy areas of Cancun and finishing at Chichen Itza.

Capture that video. Capture it good.

And how could you not be? Its Times Square at midnight. It is like NYC dangled one massivet honey pot and just sits back and watches the tourists flock uncontrollably towards the light and the promise of the quintessential New York Experience. Whatever that is.

No doubt it is quite the sight: thousands of people tracing distracted paths through the middle of Manhattan, eyes glued upward to screens offering anything from the daily news to promises of retail happiness, everything bathed in artificial daylight.

Oh the people watching opportunities.
