Day 36/365: Rachel

Day 36/365: Watch yourself.

Day 36/365: I have wonderful luck handing an silly airsoft pistol to people as a photo prop.

Give a nervous person a ridiculous prop and all watch the photos roll in; this also doubles as an excellent excuse to keep piles of really weird stuff around all of the time. Which is not to say that Rachel here was nervous at all – quite the contrary. She requested that we do a photo similar to an old shot I did of my girlfriendĀ Sam.

Obviously didn’t want to make a straight carbon copy of the original so I opted for a a darker look with some cross processing for the color. Speaking of color, I have the pleasure of working with one of the most knowledgeable inkjet print specialists in the state of Utah everyday down at Pixels Foto & Frame.

We’ve been discussing color spaces recently and he’s helped me settle on a strictly ProPhoto RGB editing environment for my images. If you’re interested in the reasons why leave a comment or write me a message and we can talk about all things color management.

Strobist: Standard three Bee setup. One softboxed key and two gridded rims.

Rim lights were running about a stop under the key, but unfortunately I don’t remember the specific power settings for each strobe. But really, its the ratio of the lights to one another that matters, not the actually power output.

I wish my Alienbees would provide a digital readout of the power output in wattseconds like the Ranger pack from theĀ snowboarding shoot. Instead you get somewhat arbitrary sliders on the back of the units. Actually, I wish all flashes gave you a readout in wattseconds; it’d be way easier to see how lights of different types could/do interact. You certainly learn how your own lights behave in relation to one another, but it would be a great educational tool to be able to look at different lights and have them all referencing the same system for displaying output.

Camera info: Nikon D300 | 50mm f/1.8D | f11 | 1/250s | Triggered via sync cables.
